French Immersion


Graduation Requirements for French Immersion

30 credits for OSSD of which 10 must be French Immersion. These include:

  • 4 French Immersion French (1 credit per grade)
  • Grade 9 Geography
  • Grade 10 History
  • Grade 10 Civics and Careers
  • At least three other courses taught in the French language (excluding third languages since the language of instruction should be the third language)

Cooperative Education can qualify as one French Immersion credit if students are working with a French speaking community partner.

French Immersion at Huron will foster a lifelong love of language learning by delivering a program that builds French proficiency through innovative instruction and a supportive community where:

  • Students are engaged in learning that promotes critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration;
  • Students diverse strengths and learning needs are met through differentiated instructional approaches;
  • Learning is rooted in action-oriented and real world tasks to engage students; and
  • Students are active in the assessment process to develop the skills of self-reflection and self-assessment.

Grade 9 French Immersion

Programming 

  • Four Strands: Listening, Reading, Writing, Oral Communication
  • Authentic oral communication that focuses on reception, production and interaction
  • Intercultural awareness and intercultural competence
  • Inquiry skills
  • Natural Progression of Language: Speaking and Listening→ Reading and Writing

Course Selection

Students in the Programming French Immersion program will select the following courses in Grade 9.

Compulsory Credits:

  • English (ENL1W1 or ENG1L1)
  • Math (MTH1W1 or MAT1L1)
  • Science (SNC1W1 or SNC1L1)
  • *Geography (CGC1WF)
  • *French (FIF1DF)
  • *Health and Physical Education (PPL1OF)

Note: To qualify for the French Immersion Certificate, students must take at least 10 credits in French Immersion.

  • Minimum of three others French Immersion courses are required

Students in Grade 9 French Immersion will select two electives. Elective credits include:

  • The Arts (Dance, Drama, Visual Arts)
  • Business Studies, Building the Entrepreneurial Mindset
  • Music (Instrumental, Repertoire, Vocal)
  • Social Science and Humanities (Exploring Family Studies)
  • Technological Education (Technology and Skilled Trades, Hairtstyling and Aesthetics)

Students who have an IEP can select: Grade 9 Learning Strategies, Skills for Success in Secondary Schools (GLE1O1)
