Meet the Department

​Ms. L. Matuga - is the department head.  She teaches food and nutrition courses, parenting focused courses and the senior social science courses.

Ms. P. Stallone - teaches food and nutrition classes in the department.

Together our motto is to support all students in their cognitive, physical, social/emotional, and moral development.  The courses offered are open to all students and provide a wide range of pathways for their futures.

About Family Studies

Family Studies is an interdisciplinary subject area that integrates the social sciences and human ecology to look at all aspects of daily life from diverse perspectives and worldviews.  It includes the study of food and nutrition, working with infants and young children, healthy relationships, decision-making and personal resource management, as well as, individual and brain development throughout the lifespan.

Courses in Family Studies allow students to develop critical and creative thinking skills in addition to other practical skills that they can use now and throughout their lives.  Hands-on experience plays a key role in Family Studies at HHSS through the participation in food labs, hand-sewing and budgeting projects, and learning about the development of the human brain.  The integration of a diversity of current global, Canadian, provincial, and local news events, socio-economic awareness, cultural, and religious events into all courses opens the minds of our students to different worldviews and prepares our students to build relationships and live in a globally diverse community.
